When a person speaks into a telephone the sound waves created by his/her voice enter the mouthpiece. An electric current carries the sound to the telephone of the person he/she is talking to. A telephone has two important parts which are the transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter of a telephone is a very delicate "electric ear". It's behind the mouthpiece. Transmitter is just like the human ear it has 14 eardrums. The eardrums of the telephone is a thin round metal disk called a diaphragm. When a person speaks into the telephone is causes it to thrash because of the diaphragm. The diaphragm vibrates at certain speeds, it all depends on the variations of the air pressure caused by the varying tone of the speaker. The receiver has an "electric mouth". Just like humans it has vocal cords. The vocal cords of the receiver is a diaphragm. Two magnets that are at the edge of the diaphragm causes it to vibrate. One of the magnets is a permanent magnet that constantly hold the diaphragm close to it. The other magnet is a electromagnet. It has a piece of the iron with a coil of the wire wounded around it. When an electric current passes through the coil, the iron becomes magnetized.

The way people lived before the telephone was invented was horrible. Here are some ways people lived without telephones.
By post- when you wanted to send letters to a friend or family it wouldn't send it right away, you would have to wait days to for it to get there and to get back to you. In person- If your cousin or friend lived down the street and you wanted to tell them something you have to walk to there house every time. Now imagine if your cousin or friend lived few miles away!
By telegraphs machines-not many people own a telegraph, but, companies would use Morse codes and a telegraph machine.
By carrier pigeons-people would send messages by putting them on their feet. When you send them you would just hope they wouldn't have gotten lost or hurt. They were used in both world wars, and are the real-world equivalent of the owls used in Harry Potter. Last but not least, On Horseback- messengers on horseback would be paid to deliver messages across the country, but is was more expensive.(http://society-politics.blurtit.com/976186/what-was-life-like-before-the-telephone-was-invented)
People would walk to houses just to tell something important to their friends. People would have trouble sending letters to their friends. It was horrible for the people. Telephones change peoples lives because once they were invented there was no more pigeons or horseback anymore. People would just pick up the phone and call their friends.
In some ways the telephones affected people. One way is that business as a whole was to make business more efficient. Before telephones were used by almost everyone, instant communications between people in different parts of a company, as well as between companies, were impossible. A person would have to spend time writing a letter to communicate with someone else. Alternatively, the person would have to travel to see the other person. This was much less efficient than being able to pick up the telephone and instantly communicate verbally with the other person.

We use the telephone today in addition to making calls, modern telephones or cell phones are used for sending and receiving text messages, taking pictures, accessing the Internet, downloading applications, sending and receiving emails, recording audio and video, and playing songs.
I believe the telephone was so important back then because it allowed people to speak to friends and family instead of walking like half a mile just to tell your friend something. The telephone changed life in a better way for me and the world.
The telephone changed peoples lives in good and bad conditions but the good thing is that now you can pick up a phone and call your friend and talk for hours.
